Resonant Magneto-Optical Rotation: New Twists in an Old Plot

چکیده
Faraday e ect [1] is the rotation of the plane of linear light polarization by a medium in a magnetic eld applied in the direction of light propagation. In 1898, Macaluso and Corbino [2], studying absorption spectra of the alkali atoms in the presence of magnetic elds, discovered that the Faraday e ect in the vicinity of resonance absorption lines also had a distinct resonant character. The essence of the Macaluso-Corbino e ect can be illustrated by considering a simple case of a F = 1 ! F 0 = 0 transition { Figure 1. Linearly polarized light incident on the sample can be resolved into two counter-rotating circular components . In the absence of a magnetic eld, the jM = 1i sublevels are degenerate and the optical resonance frequencies for + and coincide. When a magnetic eld B is applied, however, the Zeeman shifts lead to a di erence between the resonance frequencies for the two circular polarizations of 2g B= h, where g is the Lande factor and is the Bohr magneton.

Nonlinear Electro- and Magneto-Optic Effects related to Bennett Structures
Optical pumping of an atomic sample with narrow-band light can create sub-Doppler features, known as Bennett structures, in the velocity distribution of state populations. In the presence of static magnetic or electric fields, the corresponding sub-Doppler features in the index of refraction can cause nonlinear optical rotation and induced ellipticity of resonant light propagating through the a...

متن کاملMagneto-Optical Activity in High Index Dielectric Nanoantennas
The magneto-optical activity, namely the polarization conversion capabilities of high-index, non-absorbing, core-shell dielectric nanospheres is theoretically analyzed. We show that, in analogy with their plasmonic counterparts, the polarization conversion in resonant dielectric particles is linked to the amount of electromagnetic field probing the magneto-optical material in the system. Howeve...
متن کاملNonlinear magneto-optical rotation of elliptically polarized light
We predict theoretically and demonstrate experimentally an ellipticity-dependent nonlinear magneto-optic rotation of elliptically polarized light propagating in a medium with atomic coherence. We show that this effect results from hexadecapole and higher-order moments of the atomic coherence, and is associated with an enhancement of Kerr and higher-order nonlinearities accompanied by suppressio...

We studied magnetophotonic crystals (MPCs) with introduced magneticdefect layer sandwiched between magnetic and dielectric Bragg mirrors. Thesemagnetophotonic crystals have excellent capabilities to enhance reflection and Kerrrotation simultaneously. By adjusting spatial configuration such as repetition numbersof Bragg mirrors and thickness of magnetic defect layer, we a...
